The Nissiwood group of companies have
a long tradition and commitment to environment and as a result of this
awareness the sourcing of logs are exclusively from renewable forests
and plantations both domestic and world wide. Early 1980s'
Nissiwood had championed the concept of social
forestry throughout this part of the world by supplying
saplings and technical know-how to small homesteads comprising of 2 or
3 acres of land. The idea behind this philosophy was to plant and
grow at least 4 or 5 trees for every tree that is felled. Under a buy
back arrangement, the Nissiwood group also benefited by ensuring a
sustainable source for timber. By implementing such schemes, the
group of companies was able to inculcate an awareness among common
people for environmental preservation and the sustainability to this
nature’s gift to mankind, the wood.
Man and Wood
Trees and wood were man’s best friend from time immemorial.
With it, he made his dwelling place to protect himself from nature’s
fury. It was with wood he invented the wheel which still in this 21st century is the prime mover for the whole world. Man crossed the
oceans in wooden crafts. And today he has come a long way. In all
these he had his long time friend, namely WOOD.
Wood is one of the most
abundant and versatile renewable resources on earth. Its main
characteristic is that it is renewable, unlike the other resources as
ores, petroleum and coal. It has been utilized by man since the
earliest days of human existence.
These days there is a
growing awareness of the impact of trees and environment. There are
other resources which can substitute wood. But they are non
renewable. If properly used, wood offers us immense possibilities.
The guiding principle is that you plant more trees than you cut.
Therefore the emphasis on plantations
Renewable
resources– Materials like Steel, Aluminum, and Fiberglass etc are made from ores
or fossils which are not renewable and hence not renewable resources. These resources used up can never
be replaced or renewed. Trees are the best renewable resources and the cycle is very short compared to other natural resources.
Cost of
energy - A sapling
grows in a matter of 10 to 20 years to a sizable tree and no energy is
spent for the production of a sizeable wood portion from it. Whereas
any other material which is tried out to substitute wood, uses up so
much energy to take the shape of a usable material. And the cost of
energy is going up every day which makes the substituting materials
costly as ever.
Planting of trees is the
key to the solution of environment problems faced by man today. He has
indiscriminately cut down trees forgetting his responsibility to the
coming generations.
Plantation
origin - Countries like New Zealand,
Chile, USA, France are having plantations which they use for
commercial purpose which minimizes their own imports. All these
countries export many viable species of timber across the globe which
is again coming under organized plantations. Especially USA and EU
export exotic species used widely in furniture Industry.
Even now there are many
countries with vast areas of land ideal for plantations. But the
political will for utilizing this for plantation purposes is
unfortunately absent.
Hence man must realize
that he shall preserve the world given to him by his predecessors to
be handed over to the coming generation in a manner without abusing
the natural resources. If trees are in
plenty, the other natural resources are less used up.
